Monash University in collaboration with Melbourne university helped to lead a series of workshops training governments and youth representatives from around the world in quality climate change education at the national level, including monitoring, evaluation and reporting of global indicators.

This was part of Action for Climate Empowerment, the popular name for Article 6 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Article 12 of the Paris agreement.

Presenting Monash Poster to the UN

A poster focusing on public information via trusted sources, created by Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub (MCCCRH) was presented to the UN, sparking insightful, robust conversations with conference participants including the UNFCCC Secretariat.

MCCCRH is Monash University’s leading climate literacy institution which researches and implements best practice approaches to communicating climate change in partnership with leading science and media organisations.

Attending sessions on Adaptation to Climate Change, Loss & Damage

A breakthrough agreement that was reached at COP27 was the Loss and Damage Fund for vulnerable countries and much work is needed to understand how we address the impacts on communities whose lives and livelihoods are being affected by the very worst impacts of climate change. This is a focal issue for SB58 and COP28 later this year.

The Monash delegation had the opportunity to meet leaders working in the area of ‘Adaptation to Climate Change’ including UNFCCC Adaptation Committee Member Alice Gustard, who spoke on the importance of monitoring and evaluation.

Meeting notable leaders in climate action

Dr Susie Ho discussed the climate crisis and Monash’s role in driving climate action in Australia and Asia Pacific with  Jared Huntley, from Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water as well as many youth activists including leaders from the Indigenous Peoples Platform.
