Dr Alene Yong presenting at the 2024 MIPS Symposium

Research Fellow, Dr Alene Yong from the Centre of Medicine Use and Safety presented an overview on the development of an Australian Guideline on the appropriate use of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Alene is leading this clinical practice guideline and has completed an overview of systematic reviews on this topic which is currently under review for publication.

With the recent rescheduling by the Therapeutic Goods Administration to allow specifically authorised psychiatrists to prescribe MDMA and psilocybin for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and treatment-resistant depression, respectively, there is a pressing need for comprehensive, evidence-based guidelines to support clinicians in the safe, effective, and cost-effective use of these treatments.

Guidance is valuable in the context of patient or clinician uncertainty and that uncertainty often occurs when there is limited or conflicting evidence.

Alene shared an overview of the governance structure, timelines and current activities planned for this important project.
