Associate Professor Halls is Head of the Spatial Organisation of Signalling Laboratory, and a Viertel Senior Medical Research Fellow at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MIPS). Michelle obtained her PhD in Molecular Pharmacology from Monash University in 2007, before training in single cell biology as a NHMRC CJ Martin Fellow at the University of Cambridge, UK. In 2011, she established her research group within the Drug Discovery Biology Theme at MIPS. Michelle was awarded an NHMRC RD Wright Fellowship in 2013 and a Viertel Senior Medical Research Fellowship in 2020.
Michelle has published landmark papers in the EMBO Journal and Science Signaling describing the capacity of G protein-coupled receptors associated with preassembled signalling complexes to respond to ultralow agonist concentrations. She has an ongoing interest in the mechanisms that control localised GPCR signalling, and how this dictates cellular responses in normal physiology and disease.
Michelle has received awards for her research including the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences 2019 Future Research Leader Award and 2012 Young Investigator Award. She is co-Chair of the Her Research Matters Collective which aims to better leverage the talents of all researchers by improving gender equity in senior academic roles and by creating focused sponsor networks.
