Her Research Matters

Only 17% of senior scientists within Australian universities are women.

Her Research Matters (HRM) is a grass-roots driven, outcome focused collective that promotes, sponsors and fosters an inclusive and equitable leadership environment to enable all women to reach their full potential.

Her Research Matters (HRM) is a grassroots collective that promotes gender equity in science by celebrating and communicating research excellence led by women, advocating for solutions to systemic issues, and providing role models and support networks to advance the careers of the next generation of women research leaders.
HRM operates primarily at Monash University in Australia, within the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science in Parkville.
HRM is an inclusive, diverse, and supportive community, which includes early and established researchers, as well as allies of all genders to create a supportive team. We have held a variety of events and pushed for initiatives to promote a more inclusive environment within research and the faculty.
The collective is comprised of two Pillars and four focused Clusters to drive its activities:
1. The Policy and Philanthropy Pillar focuses on initiating changes to university policies to positively impact women’s career progression, and grant applications to philanthropic organisations.
2. The Networking and Sponsorship Pillar aims to build support networks throughout the Faculty, sponsor career progression by our members, and raise awareness of gender equity.
3. The four Clusters run events tailored to the needs of our members at different career stages: Emerging Research Leaders, Established Research Leaders, Education Leaders, Allies & Sponsors
While Her Research Matters is primarily focused on women in science, the collective recognises that gender equity is a complex issue that affects people of all genders. We actively invite members from all backgrounds so we can build an inclusive community to work together in promoting gender equity in science.

Some examples include:
- Peer review, Q & A, and mock interview initiatives for promotion and grant applications.
- Provide emerging leaders with advice to help them advance in their careers.
- Sponsoring members to attend Science Meets Parliament.
- Hosting sessions to promote and advocate for diversity, including panel speaker events and interactive workshops.
- Recommendations to Faculty leadership for policy changes that help to remove barriers to the career progression of women.
