Art on campus
Sissons Mural
The Sissons Mural, completed in 1961 by the artist Leonard Annois beautifully portrays the development of science, medicine and pharmacy throughout the ages, and also life on Earth. It is technically and creatively an extraordinary work of art. This film describes the detail and symbolism within this iconic artwork.
Higuchi Sculpture
Unveiled on 23 February 1972 at the First Commonwealth Pharmaceutical Association Conference in Melbourne, the Higuchi Sculpture honours Professor Takeru Higuchi (1918–1993), known as the "father of physical pharmacy." Commissioned by Dr Nigel Manning and partly funded by Eli Lilly Co., it is mounted on the eastern wall of the Manning Building at the Victorian College of Pharmacy. Higuchi pioneered drug delivery systems, including controlled-release pills and ocular treatments, and co-founded companies like Alza Corporation. The sculpture, by Norma Redpath, symbolises pharmacy education: a disc with ridges for biological, physical, and pharmaceutical sciences, and pharmacy administration, alongside a gap for practical training—all forming an abstract inverse mortar and pestle.
