Our Holistic Student Engagement Model (HSEM)
A comprehensive model of teaching, learning and assessment is required to enable our students to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes they require to enhance their employability upon graduation.
The Holistic Student Engagement Model (HSEM) model, shown in Figure one below, is designed to ensure that students are making progress towards this outcome in learning activities that develop applied knowledge of core concepts and are scaffolded by skills development.

Figure one shows our holistic student engagement model (HSEM) at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University. The rows on the left show the knowledge, skills and attitudes - i.e. the outcomes - we seek for our graduates. The columns to the right represent the strategic, integrated approaches to teaching, learning and assessment that enable our students to achieve those outcomes.
The Faculty, utilising fit-for-purpose infrastructure, enables students to achieve our vision by combining a world class research perspective with an unwavering focus on students and their learning.
We evaluate student learning through diverse, innovative, contemporary, authentic and relevant assessments that allow students to learn deeply, use and apply knowledge and skills in real-life settings, receive feedback to grow intellectually and succeed professionally, and gain evidence of their progression.
Interprofessional education will be a cornerstone of our pharmacy education as will our focus on both entry-level and more advanced practice. As they progress, students will gain and demonstrate mastery of skills in working with others, in communication, and in critical thinking, such that on graduation these skills are at the level desired by their profession. Upon graduation from our program, students are expected to carry on their ability to pursue lifelong learning and adapt to changing circumstances to meet future demands of the fields and their profession.
