Monash Pre-Service Teachers

Volunteering with the Monash Virtual School

Monash PSTs can volunteer in three different programs:

  • VCE Program
  • Primary School Program
  • International Program

Depending on whether you are training to become a Primary teacher, a Secondary teacher, or completing a combined degree, you are welcome to participate in any combination of these opportunities that align with your interests, strengths, and availability.

VCE Program (Year-long, team-based, online)

Designed for PSTs training to become Secondary School Teachers, this program offers a structured, online, year-long VCE teaching experience.

What’s involved:

  • Application required due to the year-long commitment
  • Training to prepare you for VCE teaching such as our annual induction conference
  • Collaborate as part of a teaching team
  • Deliver interactive, curriculum-focused lessons
  • Receive ongoing professional development and mentoring

To get a sense of what the experience is really like, hear directly from two past volunteers. In this short video, they share how the program helped them grow as teachers, build confidence, and develop the professional qualities schools look for in graduate teachers, including teamwork, collaboration, and the ability to take on feedback.

Primary School Program (Flexible, needs-based, in-person)

The Primary School Program is ideal for PSTs preparing for Primary teaching and offers practical, hands-on experience in delivering high-quality STEM learning in local primary schools.

You’ll work closely with our Coordinator of Primary School Programs, a highly experienced STEM educator who designs innovative, engaging lesson sequences in collaboration with partner schools. These sessions are often delivered to large groups of students, and your role is to attend the school in person and support the smooth running of these lessons.

What you can expect:

  • Opportunities arise throughout the year based on school needs.
  • PSTs are contacted via Moodle and/or email when sessions become available.
  • Support high-quality, innovative STEM lessons, created in partnership with schools.
  • Gain real classroom experience, particularly with large-group STEM facilitation.
  • Receive constructive feedback from an expert educator to strengthen your teaching practice.
  • Build professional connections with local primary schools and strengthen your employability.

This is an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in high-quality STEM teaching, develop confidence, and demonstrate the collaboration, initiative, and professionalism schools look for in graduate teachers.

If you are interested in applying for the Primary School Program, keep an eye on your email and Moodle as opportunities are posted as they become available.

International Program

Monash PSTs are also eligible to volunteer in the International Program, which supports students living in conflict zones through online learning.
