Giulio Serripierri

In the last year while completing Work Integrated Learning I was involved in the Youth in the City project, collaborating with Professor Rita Wilson and Dr Francesco Ricatti. The project was carried out by academics from Monash University, both Melbourne and Prato campuses and with academics from other universities. The main goal of the project was to describe the city of Prato in Italy, a very multicultural city, through the eyes of high school students. I worked on the provision of subtitles and translations for videos and documents that are used to facilitate the project in classrooms. My highlight of the project was working on the translations and subtitling from Italian to English. The internship contributed to my understanding of the importance of having intercultural skills and being able to bridge the gap between cultures, and that’s where collectively the figure of translator and interpreter comes into play.
