The resistance of in-situ stresses on the damage of deep rock mass and anisotropy in the crack propagation direction induced by the stress difference in the horizontal and vertical directions are the main causes for the difficulties in the excavation of deep rock mass. When the magnitude of in-situ stresses exceeds 30MPa, crack coalescence between blastholes becomes difficult.
