Program Details

Participants

Open to all Monash students who would like to build confidence communicating in English, connect with other students, and explore university life, culture and friendship through interactive peer-led sessions.

Duration

Each series runs for 8 weeks during the semester, beginning in Teaching Week 1. Each session runs for 1 hour. Multiple sessions are offered each week on different campuses.

Create meaningful connections through confident communication. Explore how friendships grow, navigate different social situations and build relationships that last beyond university.

Start your Monash journey with confidence. Learn what to expect at Monash University, explore campus life, and get to know the people, places and opportunities that will support you throughout your university experience.
2 Navigating Monash

Wondering what university terminology like WES, census dates or course maps means? Learn the language of university life, discover key Monash systems and services, and practise asking for help with confidence.
3 Belonging at Monash: Conversation & Connection

Build confidence, make connections and find your place at Monash. Meet other students, share your experiences, and discover practical ways to feel more connected to campus life.
4 Speaking up at Uni

Express yourself with confidence. Build the language and confidence to share your ideas, ask questions, and participate in university conversations.
5 Talking to Lecturers & Staff

Learn how to communicate confidently with tutors, lecturers and university staff. Practise asking questions, understanding feedback, writing professional emails, and navigating academic conversations effectively.
6 Working Together at Monash

Successful group projects start with great communication. Learn how to communicate effectively with classmates, assign tasks, solve common teamwork challenges, and build strong collaboration skills.
7 Communication Beyond the Classroom

Practise speaking about life beyond your studies. Share your interests, discuss your goals, recommend activities and build the communication skills to connect in everyday university life.
8 Game On!

Put your skills into action! Celebrate the end of the Uni Life Series through games, challenges, team activities and prizes that bring together everything you've learned in a fun and interactive session.

Culture Series (Module 2 - ECU0002) View

1 Everyday Aussie English

Understand everyday Australian English. Learn common slang, casual expressions, small talk and conversation strategies to communicate more naturally and confidently.
2 Living in Australia

Explore everyday life in Australia. Learn about Australian values, community life and everyday expectations while gaining practical knowledge to help you settle into your new environment.
3 Aussie Culture & Conversations

Ever wondered what Australians really mean? Learn to recognise humour, sarcasm, indirect language and social cues so you can engage in everyday conversations with confidence.
4 Aussie Lifestyle

Experience everyday Australian life through food, coffee culture, festivals and local traditions while building confidence in talking about culture and sharing your own experiences.
5 Communicating Across Cultures

Build the skills needed to communicate respectfully across cultures. Explore different communication styles, perspectives and strategies for navigating cultural differences effectively.
6 Managing Your Daily Life

Develop the English language and practical skills to manage everyday life in Australia, from making appointments and visiting the doctor to solving common problems independently.
7 Aussie Unwritten Rules

Discover the hidden social norms that help Australians live, study and work together. Learn about personal space, fairness, shared spaces, and everyday etiquette through real-life situations.
8 Game On!

Celebrate everything you've learned in the Culture Series through interactive games, team challenges and real-life scenarios. Put your Aussie English, cultural knowledge and communication skills into action in a fun, relaxed environment.

Build meaningful connections from day one. Learn practical conversation strategies to meet new people, start conversations and develop friendships both on and off campus.
2 Building Strong Friendships

Great friendships do not happen by chance; they grow over time. Explore the habits, communication skills, and everyday actions that help build trust, strengthen connections and create lasting friendships.
3 Finding Your People

Everyone connects differently. Explore what matters most to you in a friendship, build confidence in social situations and reflect on the qualities that help meaningful connections grow.
4 The Unwritten Rules of Friendship

Friendships are shaped by unspoken expectations, boundaries and everyday interactions. Explore different friendship styles and build the confidence to navigate social expectations across cultures.
5 Living Together

Sharing a home means sharing responsibilities. Practise the language and communication skills needed to navigate shared living, resolve everyday challenges and build positive relationships with housemates.
6 Staying Connected

Making friends is only the beginning. Learn practical ways to maintain friendships even when you are away. reconnect with others and support the people who matter to you through meaningful everyday communication.
7 Friendship Passport: Your Journey Continues

Explore the qualities that earn a place in your Friendship Passport. Discover what makes meaningful friendships thrive. Recognise the values that matter most to you, and celebrate the connections you've built along the way.
8 Game On!

Celebrate everything you've learned in the Friends Series through interactive games, team challenges and real-life scenarios. Put your communication skills into action in a fun, supportive and social environment.
