Understanding SETU View

Faculties decide which teachers and units will be evaluated. Certain units or teaching staff may be excluded, for example, to protect response anonymity in smaller cohorts. Although all teaching staff can request an evaluation, the final decision on who will be evaluated is made by the teaching faculty, in consultation with other relevant faculties.
In an academic year there are three (3) survey periods into which an evaluation will fall: Semester 1, Semester 2 and Summer Semester. Survey scheduling depends on each unit’s teaching period start and end dates.
- Units with a teaching period end date of 1 April – 30 June will be evaluated in Semester 1
- Units with a teaching period end date of 1 July – 2 December will be evaluated in Semester 2
- Units with a teaching period end date of 3 December – 31 March will be evaluated in Summer Semester.

It is the responsibility of the owning faculty to notify staff that they are being evaluated. A list of all units selected for evaluation in the current round is updated weekly and can be used to filter for a specific unit, faculty and/or staff name. This list can be used to determine if your name has been selected for teacher evaluation within a particular unit/s. If you have identified that your unit/s has not been selected for evaluation and/or specific staff have not been selected within a particular unit - please contact your Faculty SETU Representative in the first instance.
University guidelines endorse the use of online surveys for their resource efficiency as well as simplicity and consistency in administration and management. Students largely prefer completing surveys online. This is because they find online surveys easy to use, have flexibility in allowing them to complete surveys when they choose, and are simpler to locate as all evaluations are accessible from a single interface within the my.monash portal.
Yes, SETU can be completed on both desktop and mobile devices. To maximise response rates, we encourage staff to allocate 5-10 minutes during class for students to complete SETU using online technology. A set of promotional materials is available on the SETU Survey promotion webpage to assist with this.
Students can access their evaluations in several ways:
1. Directly via the SETU survey landing page.
2. Through the Moodle block ‘STUDENT EVALUATION OF TEACHING AND UNITS (SETU) - TASK LIST’ displayed under the units section in Moodle.
3. Through a link provided in their weekly email invitation from Monash Evaluations.

Accessing my results View

Response rate monitoring reports are updated weekly during the main survey round and are available on the response rate report webpage. These reports contain faculty and University-wide response rates, and enable users to drill down to response rates at the individual unit level.
Staff designated as nominees can access ‘Subject View Management’ tasks (response rate views) within the Moodle block titled ‘STUDENT EVALUATION OF TEACHING AND UNITS (SETU) - TASK LIST’ available on all unit-level pages in Moodle. The SETU survey landing page also provides individual ‘Subject View Management’ links for each unit where faculty have assigned nominee status.
A complete list of quantitative (unit and teaching evaluation) and qualitative reports and data is available on the SETU survey results webpage. Various information resources are accessible to all Monash staff; however, qualitative reports and data are restricted to authorised staff only.
A range of quantitative and qualitative reports, pivot tables, and data files are available on the SETU survey results webpage. While some content is accessible to students, the majority is restricted to Monash staff, with qualitative reports and data further limited to authorised staff.
Support is available to help staff use and interpret the SETU pivot tables. These tables allow staff to review the historical performance of specific units and access de-identified respondent-level information, including SETU results by student and course demographic characteristics.
Access to faculty qualitative data is strictly limited to the Associate Dean of Education (ADE), the Faculty Manager, and staff authorised by the ADE (or equivalent). Due to its sensitive nature, this data is stored on a restricted SETU faculty Google site.
Faculty nominees are staff members selected to receive both qualitative and quantitative data at the end of each semester. Nominees are responsible for granting access to this data in accordance with their faculty’s management structures.

Academic staff are in the best position to encourage student participation in evaluations, as students are more likely to respond to requests from their teachers than to general bulk email communications. Using a variety of media to promote SETU participation is essential, as this data serves multiple purposes, including unit enhancement, strategic planning, course and unit reviews, and staff development, promotion, and confirmation. A higher response rate ensures a more representative student voice to inform these processes.
Academic staff should emphasise the importance and impact of student feedback, demonstrating how previous input has shaped curriculum development and improved the student experience. Research and feedback indicate that closing the feedback loop with students positively influences their engagement and participation in evaluations.
Closing the feedback loop is essential to show students that their feedback is valued and utilised. Greater student engagement and participation lead to higher response rates and more representative feedback, providing a richer source of data for staff to use in unit enhancement, strategic planning, course and unit reviews, as well as staff development, promotion, and confirmation.
