EIH Emerging Research Leader Fellowships (2026-2027)

EIH Emerging Research Leader Fellowships (2026-2027)

The Environmental Informatics Hub (EIH), within the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University, brings together researchers in AI and environmental science to help reverse the biodiversity crisis. Our visiting fellowship scheme supports outstanding early-career researchers to build collaborations at the intersection of ecological modelling, conservation and AI, and develop AI for environmental and societal good.

About the fellowship

Fellows will spend up to 12 weeks at Monash’s Clayton campus in Australia, working with an EIH-affiliated academic from the Faculty of Information Technology on a jointly developed research project.

Each fellowship provides up to AUD $12,000 towards travel and accommodation. Fellows are responsible for their living expenses.

Visits should advance a joint publication or grant proposal and establish a basis for continued collaboration. We are particularly interested in supporting researchers with the potential to pursue future fellowships and research funding opportunities with the Hub. Fellows will also participate in EIH activities and present their work at a Hub semina

Who should apply?

We welcome applications from outstanding researchers in ecological modelling and related disciplines who are interested in developing or applying AI to ecological and conservation problems. Applicants must have completed their PhD within the past five years - accounting for career interruptions.

Successful candidates will demonstrate:

  • A strong record of high-quality research, including publications that demonstrate original contributions.
  • Independent and critical thinking, including the ability to assess methods, evidence and their limitations.
  • Experience in, or a clear commitment to, working across disciplines.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, openness to different perspectives, and a willingness to contribute to the Hub’s research community.

Selection will consider these qualities alongside the strength and feasibility of the proposed project and its potential to establish a lasting collaboration.

Applicants should discuss their proposed project with an EIH-affiliated academic from Monash’s Faculty of IT before applying. Researchers seeking help identifying a suitable host are welcome to contact eih-fit@monash.edu

Fellowships are subject to completion of Monash’s visitor approval process and confirmation of appropriate visa and insurance arrangements.
