STEM Play in Hospital at the Starlight Room

STEM Play in Hospital at the Starlight Room

Funded by

ARC Linkage Project LP170100026

The aim of this research project is to evidence how Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) can be used to facilitate active play in the Starlight rooms at a children’s hospital.

Play is fundamental to children’s development and wellbeing and for children in hospital which is has a unique set of constraints with the variability of age of participants, duration of participation, temporary and permanent disabilities and hygiene protocols. Many kids love computer games but although they are great and fun they are only one form of play. This project used a range of STEM tools to facilitate a broad range of activities based on a space theme to provide opportunities for play, collaboration and problem solving.

Starlight Room

The Outcome

More than 500 children co-developed glowing planets, rocket ships and galaxies during hands-on screen-free technology workshops to transform the Starlight Express Room environment.

The project was recognised as a winner of the 2025 Good Design Awards and nominated for the Victorian Premier's Awards.
