Research
Our research in data is deep and diverse
Data engineering is a multi-faceted field. We work across a range of areas to ensure reliable, efficient information access for all.
Big data management
The volume of data is growing exponentially. And with it, the need for businesses to better manage their information.
Our work in this area focuses on the three Vs of big data: volume, variety and velocity.
IoT data processing
Ambient and ubiquitous, sensors connect the world.
As a result, they generate enormous amounts of data which is then processed and analysed to provide insights into various domains – such as digital health, manufacturing and transportation.
Urban computing
We have access to a huge volume and variety of data that’s collected through devices, infrastructures, transportation systems, social networks and other sources.
Our group investigates how this information can be processed and analysed to improve the quality of life in urban environments.
Spatial databases
Spatial database systems support the management, enquiry and analysis of spatial objects.
We use online maps extensively to capture rich geospatial data and other information around businesses, the environment, traffic conditions and more.
Fog, edge and cloud computing
Cloud computing is the backend solution of choice for many modern IT applications.
Recent developments and paradigms, such as serverless computing, software-defined networking and network edge processing, are creating countless opportunities in this area.
Mobile information systems
Mobile apps are now actively used in digital health to help professionals gather comprehensive data on patient activities and conditions – in order to deliver better healthcare.
Working with Cabrini Hospital, a noteworthy initiative has been developing an app to monitor the side effects of chemotherapy in real time.
