Professor Whyte was Foundation Professor of Librarianship (1975-1988) of the Monash Graduate School of Librarianship (now part of the Caulfield School of Information Technology).

She was instrumental in establishing master’s courses in librarianship, archives and records, building a strong PhD and master’s by research program, and developing Monash's research profile in these fields.

In 1976 Professor Whyte founded Ancora Press – taken from the Monash University motto Ancora imparo ('I am still learning'). The hand printing press, housed within the Centre for the Book at Caulfield, supported the teaching of bibliography and textual studies, specifically in librarianship and English.

A keen book collector, she left a large part of her personal rare book collection to the Monash University Library. This included many Australian poetry and private press books.

The Whyte Fund is a reflection of Professor Whyte’s professional and personal interests in English literature, librarianship and philosophy. Her sibling, Phyllis Whyte, also bequeathed a substantial part of her estate to Monash in honour of her sister.
