Before' Floor Plan

The existing house poses several limitations concerning orientation, privacy, isolation & insufficient space for circulation. The site’s orientation poses a challenge to sunlight exposure in the house’s interior as its northern side also faces a two-storey building from its neighbour, blocking sunlight from entering. Meanwhile, the configuration lacks privacy as it features private bedrooms & a bathroom facing the street front & located right next to the entryway. The house also poses a problem for accessible circulation as the bedrooms are small & cannot accommodate for independent wheelchair usage due to the insufficient space for wheelchair circulation.

After' Floor Plan

The following strategies, subtraction, separating private spaces from the public, bedroom+, & plug-in pod extensions responds to the limitations of the house. Subtraction responds to the lack of sunlight exposure by removing the brick & roof tile layers to allow sunlight penetration into its interior. Meanwhile, private spaces of bedrooms & bathrooms are moved to the back of the house while the kitchen & living to the front to provide privacy for residents. Bedroom+ builds on it by creating clusters of private spaces, compromising a bedroom, ensuite bathroom, & garden. A new enclosure pod added extends the needed space for circulation for wheelchair users as there is insufficiency to cater.

Before & After Spaces

The reconfiguration of the house will positively impact the residents' experience as it offers more connection to nature.
