Existing Plan

The key issues of the existing home included an uncovered entry, inaccessible garage, minimal carer accommodation and small bedrooms. The issues of the existing home make the house not an inviting place to live and limited private space for disabled residents to retreat and escape. The aim for the reconfigure is to make minimal changes that enhance the liveability and quality of space for the disabled residents.

Reconfigured Plan

The aim for the reconfigured final house was to make the most impactful and positive minimal changes to the existing suburban home. Designing from 5 residents to 3 residents allowed more opportunity to enhance the quality of spaces. What was considered throughout the semester was the need for every space within the home to be prioritised. A key design opportunity for the house was the expansion of the bedrooms with private courtyards and ensuite. The spacious bedrooms provide light, air and views to the residents private garden, improving the quality and liveability of the space for all residents.

Bathroom and Room Addition

The Bathroom and Room Addition is prefabricated using Structurally Insulated Panels (SIP) with a Modular Construction System. The addition is constructed in two stages, firstly the bathroom pod which can be constructed externally, while the room addition can be done at separate stages depending on the existing resident living situations. The aim of the addition is to provide more space to the existing bedroom, while providing a ensuite with optimal north eastern light and views to the large garden.

Bathroom Pod Section Detail

The Bathroom Pod is a prefabricated element using Structurally Insulated Panels, aiming to provide high ceilings, open space, natural lighting and views to the external environment. The Bathroom Pod can be safely deconstructed and aims to be reused for future use, limiting negative environmental impact and ensuring its longevity for the future.
