Yujie (Susan) Yang

I am currently a spatial design student and I am working on my last studio project in my university career. This project is called Future City Free Space Park. I hope that this playground will invite more people to participate without making age an issue and make the most of the free space in the city. This is so that it can have the ability to continue to grow in the future, keeping it interesting and participatory. I chose to design the space underneath the Jianghan Second Bridge in Wuhan, as the city is growing rapidly, there is less and less space to use, so I made full use of the space under the bridge and combined the bridge and river elements to make the play more interesting.

Project Elevation

This picture shows the process of my design, how to play in life, choosing the site, and the initial model into the final design. Also outlining small details of my design, such as the shape of the slide and the main object changes.

Concept Collage

This is the scene diagram and physical model I processed in Photoshop to show the initial playground I wanted to present, which included a climbing frame under the bridge, and a slide into the water. The concept design of my climbing frame is based on the planet on which people live - the Earth, so the colour chosen is also based on blue. The material chosen for the model is more lightweight and environmentally friendly secondary use of materials.

Slide Elevation Render

This is a render elevation that can better show what I have designed the slide as, the slide has four entrances, the basic challenge is from the climbing frame to a small curve into the river. The difficult challenge is to start from the bridge to experience a more exciting height as well as the bend. Different options will attract more people to participate.

Future Space Park Render

This is a panoramic render showing how people can use the playground and how they can get more fun out of it. I use the spare space in the city to create a futuristic play for people of all ages. Large climbing frames for children to play and for people to sit on to rest and enjoy the scenery, slides and surfboards to stimulate and relax young people, and walkers for older people to exercise.

Playground Detail Render

This is a zoomed in rendering to see a large climbing frame below, with a ring walker at the bottom of the frame and children's play equipment, swings and removable surfboards hanging from the top of the climbing frame. On the outside of the walker there is a semi-circle of free removable life preservers and surfboards. This is in line with the cultural background of Wuhan, which has the Yangtze and Han rivers, where people like to swim for exercise in the winter. Therefore, a wrap-around river slide will add more fun and will make better use of the land and water space.
