Zhuoyan (Mandy) Lyu

My name is Zhuoyan Lyu (Mandy), I am a third year spatial design student. As a spatial designer, many of my inspirations come from living, enjoying and loving cultures around the world. My project name is "inflatable dragon boat". It is about the traditional Chinese culture -- dragon boat race. In the future theme, water is increasingly scarce, so I built an inflatable dragon boat with slides that simulate gliding on water. I also imagine that in the future people can use inflatable dragon boats to play in the grassland, city, desert and other dry places to pass on this traditional culture.

A floating paper boat

It was a paper boat floating on water. It came from a class at the beginning of the semester. Tutor asked what other forms of play a piece of paper might have besides being written on. So I folded it into a paper boat, and put it on the water to let it flow, which is the inspiration for my later project.

Physical model of inflatable dragon boat

I made this 1:10 physical model of an inflatable dragon boat based on my imagination of future play. It is made of light clay and balloons. I added many details to the traditional dragon boat to make it look more realistic.

3D model of inflatable dragon boat

I made a 3D model of the inflatable dragon boat. Compared with the physical model, I simplified its appearance and made it more like the appearance of the traditional dragon boat. The slide at the bottom can be removed or retained according to the different environment.

Dragon boat race on the grassland in the future

In the future, when people are aware of the need to protect water resources, the forms of play will change accordingly. This is the scene of the dragon boat race on the grass. People ride inflatable dragon boats and slide down. Depending on the terrain and the size of the site, the slide will be extended accordingly. Another way to play without the slide is when people run forward by riding inflatable dragon boats, which tests teamwork like a traditional race.

Dragon boat race in the desert in the future

In the future, when water is scarce, dragon boat races may be held in the desert in some areas. This is the most extreme case, but the dragon boat race can still go on. Inflatable dragon boats are also lighter and easier to carry.
