Monash Art, Design and Architecture Student Exhibition 2022

Christie Lane

I have been exploring my identity through costume and makeup, a project which started in the lockdown of 2021. Through dressing up and creating different alter-egos, I mask parts of of identity, whilst exposing myself through the frankness of photography.
I like to create dark images with stark lighting and lots of shadow. This is informed by my interest in film and photographic noir.
For the second half of 2022, I wanted to enhance and challenge my work by printing the photographs onto different mediums. This includes image transfers, as well as printing on transparent paper.

Installation view from "Who?" exhibition at Intermission Gallery

This image contains 4 different artworks that I used in my exhibition at Intermission gallery, Monash University ,Caulfield Campus (27th-1st October 2022). There are two transparent photographs (A3 size) that are suspended. On the wall, there are two image transfers onto different mediums. I used cold lighting to highlight the transparency.

Installation view taken from "Who?" exhibition at Intermission Gallery

This image shows two transparent photographs I printed at Monash University. They are A3 size. The photographs are taken from a photo shoot I did with fellow classmate, Connie Hsueh. I was drawn to use these photos in particular as I was interested to see how the blackness would impact the transparency. I also feel drawn to the character I was dressed up as.

Image transfer onto plaster piece

This is an image transfer I did using mod podge. I laser printed one of my photographs from a different photo shoot, and put a thick layer of the mod podge on top of it. It set for 24 hours and then I scrubbed back the wet paper. The size of the plaster is approximately 30x30cm.
