Hi! I'm an Melbourne-based designer specialising in brand identity and illustration. For this major activation project, I chose the topic 'Parasocial Relationships'. The meaning of parasocial is to be in a one-sided relationship with a celebrity or fictional person. I think this topic should be discussed more now as social media and the internet continues to grow further. To complete this campaign, I chose an illustrative design that helps to raise awareness and educate others about this issue.
Parasocial Relationships' DRK
For the activation campaign, I first did some research and created a DRK(design research kit) to gather information about 'Parasocial Relationships'. The kit included questions related to the topic as well as two activities. There was a quiz that ranked how parasocial the participants were from a scale of 1-10. A sticker activity was also included, which researched about how they perceive parasocial relationships were formed.
Parasocial Relationships' Infographic
An Infographic based on the answers I got from my design research kit. The design of the infographic is based on 2000s teen magazines featuring celebrity quizzes and gossip. From my infographic, I realised how many participants were parasocial and unaware of it. There is also an awareness of the negative impact it can cause people as well as prevention methods. These key information then prompted me to progress onto my campaign.
Parasocial Relationships' Board Game
The primary design outcome of my activation campaign. 'Paraopoly' is a combination of parasocial and monopoly. The game is about how you live as a celebrity and your goal is to get rid of all your parasocial fans through a variety of events. The sole purpose of the game is to help others realise the whole parasocial interactions that occur between celebrity and fans. By recognising these aspects, it will help decrease the chances of people becoming parasocial. The design of the board game is done to capture people's attention with fun, simple illustrations that clearly target the demographic of teenagers to young adults.
Parasocial Relationships' Poster Series
The 'Parasocial Relationships' poster series helps to convey the topic even further, as well as a promotion for the board game. This supporting outcome delves more into the game's purpose and engages them to look out for parasocial behaviour.
Parasocial Relationships' Instagram Campaign
The Instagram campaign is similar to the poster series. The designs are intended to promote the board game and get others to purchase, as well as question themselves to see if they are exhibiting parasocial actions.
