Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2023

Howdy guys, I’m Zechen Liu. A student who just graduated from Monash University in Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Media Communication.
As a communication designer, I like to adopt various forms of design to express stories, ideas, and messages to the target audiences. I focus on brand identity and transform it into visuals such as motion, publications, and posters that embrace culture, history, and society accordingly.

Sleep is simply what you need

This design project is named “Sleep is simply what you need”. I found this topic interesting because in society, people in different stages of life all experience sleep deprivation for various reasons. It seems like having less sleep has become a representation of energy, youth, and success, as we can see in pop culture and real-life scenarios. A significant issue is that sleep deprivation can lead to a vicious cycle: people have sleep deprivation and take extreme ways to cope with it; it keeps repeating and repeating, totally worsening the sleep pattern.

Main poster

The main poster of the primary outcome embraced the soothing colours of a starry night to evoke a sense of restfulness and also melting text to emphasise the emotional vulnerability of sleep deprivation. Engages with the audience by allowing them to reflect on their vicious cycles.
It breaks the cycle into four sections with four different colours that are unique to each other but fit with a background that Graiddnet sinks into it. There’s also a QR code that links to the web game to make further calls to action.

Sub Posters

The sub posters that accompanied with the main posters expanded each section of the cycle with some possible answers provided to make a connection with the audience.

Web game

The Supporting outcome is a web game that integrates with the audiences. It’s a game that is to be played on the laptop. Each page provides answers to each section of the vicious cycle. The audience could learn how to deal with sleep deprivation through winning and falling in this Q&A game.

DRK: Questionnaire

Fan guide

The second Supporting outcome is a fan guide hanging on a key ring. It informs the audience about what to have for coping with sleep deprivation, from healthy to unhealthy. This is a contrastingly small one that is easy to keep in a pocket or put next to the bed.
