Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2024

I am a final year Bachelor of Architectural Design student passionate about creating spaces that foster community. My studies have equipped me with experience in various architectural typologies and travel studios, enhancing my understanding of architecture in different cultural contexts. In my final semester studio, I explored the vibrant Piedimonte quadrant in North Fitzroy, focusing on architectural preservation and how thoughtful design can promote urban health and density while respecting the area's unique heritage.

Cornerstone Commons: Living North Fitzroy

Located in North Fitzroy’s Piedimonte quadrant, this project explores affordable housing for artists, reimagining footpaths and corner spaces as vibrant social hubs. Inspired by Fitzroy’s unique blend of street art, cafes, and local businesses, the design leverages transitional spaces to encourage interaction between public and private realms.

The footpaths here are not mere corridors but active thresholds, promoting community engagement and artistic expression. By integrating communal spaces, green facades, and pedestrian-friendly areas, the design balances heritage with modernity, fostering an adaptable, inclusive, and resilient community that enriches North Fitzroy’s cultural landscape.

West Elevation

The choice of brick for this design harmonises with the historical façade, which was also constructed using brick, creating visual continuity between the old and new structures. This material selection respects the heritage character of the site, while the warm tones of the brick add texture and depth, blending seamlessly with the existing streetscape. The new brickwork complements the original architecture, fostering a cohesive appearance that acknowledges the area's historical identity while supporting modern residential use.

Axonometric Structure Drawing

An axonometric drawing with site context highlights the proposed street interventions designed to enhance the quality of space and improve overall accessibility.

Detail Balcony Section

The balcony is a carefully considered space where I aimed to create a narrative through the facade, featuring beautiful green plants paired with a striking contrasting red metal screen. This balcony highlights the character of the building, celebrating the harmonious relationship between the historic facade and the modern structure while fostering meaningful moments.
