Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2024

This semester, Shantel examined the duality of architecture - the creation of a building and the void left by material extraction. Her project, the Bio-Material Tertiary Education Centre located in Lysterfield, Victoria, fosters a dialogue between new and existing structures and landscapes, embedding educational opportunities in regenerative practices. Designed to evolve over 30 years alongside quarry operations, it uses local materials like basalt, hornfels, bluestone aggregate, and strawboard, honouring the site's geology. The project envisions a harmonious balance between extraction and ecological renewal, creating a lasting connection between architecture and the environment.
