Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2024

My name is Hongwei Zhao , and I majored in communication design. I like to explore my ideas and bring them from creativity to real life. I enjoy creating posters and illustrations. In the Activation studio project, my theme is to explore the relationship between language and cultural identity. Through the questionnaire, I learned that a person's native language will determine cultural background in most cases.

I created a primary outcome, "Language and Cultural Identity" poster, and two supporting outcomes, a social tool "Hello cards" and an animation. I hope to make people be proud of their native language and cultural background, and boldly show them.

“Language and Culture Identify” poster

This is my primary outcome. The theme is “Language and Cultural Identity”. The slogan – “First kind of language you use, will determine your cultural background” is intended to draw people's attention to their mother tongue. There are some patterns on the black background, which are symbols of different cultures. The protagonist is a sideways orange silhouette. I did not add any features to this silhouette because I hope he can represent anyone from any culture. Some chat bubbles with different languages' "hello" came out of his mouth. The color of the bubble is the color that is meaningful or representative of the culture. The poster comes in two color versions

DRK Questionnaire

This is a questionnaire I made. The cover design uses a black background to make the illustration more eye-catching. The main body is a globe with "Hello" written in different languages around it. In the design inside, I used some gray patterns to add visual effects.

Infographic posters

Hello cards

Hello card is a social gadget designed by me. It can be distributed by the holder to introduce your cultural background and let others know you better. You can also give a Hello card to new friends in your life after you understand their cultural background to bring you closer.

Hello cards

"Hello" is written in different languages in the middle of the card, and the pronunciation is marked. On the back of the card is an illustration of a mouth. Cards in different languages use different colors, which have certain symbolic meanings in the culture of the language.

Hello animation

This is an animation I made to showing the word hello in the most spoken languages of the world.Every frame of the film is hand- painted, hoping to bring people a sense of intimacy through this texture. In any language, "hello" is the easiest way to express kindness, and it is also one of the first languages to learn. A hello can establish a short-term positive relationship between people, which transcends cultural background. The entire film has 162 frames of images. The film is 22 seconds long
