Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2024

Hi, I am Sierra. I am an aspiring communication design and business marketing graduate with a passion for creating design for change. I firmly believe that design is an outlet for addressing societal issues and leading the way to long-term solutions.

I have a keen interest in motion design, branding, identity, and publication. My featured work ‘the listening project,’ dives into the need for necessary political conversation. We live in a time where political discourse is at it’s highest, and without taking the steps to initiate conversation, it can lead to extreme and dangerous beliefs. My campaign takes the form of a board game, informational posters, and social media campaign.

Don't Talk About Politics At The Dinner Table (Board Game)

Political discussion is often avoided in social settings. However, this sort of conversation is essential because it allows us to connect with our community, promotes empathy, and hopefully, avoids radicalisation into dangerous political avenues. ‘Don’t Talk About Politics At The Dinner Table’, introduces the different streams of political beliefs in a casual and comedic context. The main purpose of this outcome is to promote healthy and light-hearted political discussion. Players are encouraged to learn about different political ideologies and work towards different and similar end-game goals.

Don't Talk About Politics At The Dinner Table (Cards)

These cards form the basis of the initial board game. Each player is presented with an opportunity to step into the shoes of a different political ideology. Often times there is misinformation and lack of empathy established between groups. This conversation-led board game, allows players to see through the eyes of an individual who may have different political belief’s to their own.

Public Poster Series - The Listening Project

Within a public setting, this poster series forces a viewer to be confronted with the idea of political empathy. The poster campaign directly links to a social media page with similar conversation prompts to engage viewers in political discussion.

realise radical[ised] - Design Research Kit (DRK)

Today, we are more exposed to extreme and damaging beliefs. Realise radical[ised] aims to capture an individual’s understanding and attitudes towards political extremism. Is a government's actions a reflection of its people? This design research kit allows participants to explore similar questions through interactive forms of data collection, drawing, and sticker placements.
