Dr Peter Eggenhuizen
PhD thesis title: “The role of T cells in health and disease”, under the supervision of Professor Joshua Ooi and Dr Poh-Yi Gan, in the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health.
This award is given in recognition of the engagement Peter had with industry during his PhD to translate basic research findings into cell-based therapies for a variety of autoimmune conditions. More specifically, with his supervisor's support, he gained industry partnerships for the preclinical development of engineered T regulatory cell (Treg) therapies to target the autoimmune diseases systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The engineered Treg therapy for SLE was licensed to Amgen Inc, a top US pharmaceutical company. The engineered Treg therapy for IBD was licensed to Biocurate Inc, an Australian bioincubator company. These industry partnerships led to the development and validation of these therapies as potential cell-based therapies for SLE and IBD, which are hoped to have significant real-world impact in improving outcomes for SLE and IBD patients.
