Pathway options: there’s more than one way into Monash
Pathways to Monash | Entry requirements | What are entry schemes | What are pathways | Removing barriers
If your child does not meet the entry requirements for direct entry into a Monash course, there are still many ways to achieve their study goals. Monash offers a range of entry schemes and pathway options designed to recognise potential, support different circumstances and provide alternative routes into university study.
The difference between an entry scheme and a pathway? We’ll dive into more detail in this article, but in simple terms:
- Entry schemes adjust a student’s ATAR based on individual circumstances
- Pathways provide alternative entry routes into a degree
Depending on eligibility, your child may access one or both of these options.
Understanding university entry requirements
All Monash courses have entry requirements, which may include:
- minimum academic results
- English language requirements
- subject prerequisites
- additional course-specific requirements (such as interviews or auditions)
These are outlined on each course page. If your child meets the entry requirements, they can apply directly. If not, there are still structured alternatives available, which we’ve outlined below.
What are entry schemes?
ATAR results don’t always reflect a student’s academic ability or full potential. Entry schemes recognise this by considering personal circumstances that may have affected a student’s educational performance, while still identifying students with the capability to succeed at university.
We offer several entry schemes at Monash, including:
- The Monash Guarantee
- Equity Schemes (SEAS)
- Monash Indigenous Entry Scheme
- Elite Athlete and Performers Entry Scheme
These schemes can adjust selection outcomes or guarantee entry when certain criteria are met, helping to ensure that capable students aren’t disadvantaged by circumstances alone.
What are the pathway options?
If your child doesn’t meet direct entry requirements, Monash also offers structured pathway programs designed to support their transition into a degree. These include:
- Diploma of Tertiary Studies (DoTS)
- Diploma of Higher Education (DoHE)
- Monash Access Program (MAP)
- Monash College Diplomas
- Single-subject study options
- University or course transfers
- TAFE pathways
Many of these pathway options provide credit towards a Monash degree and are designed to build academic skills, confidence and readiness for university study.
