Work Life Balance

Almost 50% of University students are also working while they study. Working while studying is a great way to get work experience and is sometimes necessary for those students who live away from family and need to support themselves.

Avoiding Burnout

Regardless of why students work while studying at Uni, it is important for working students to manage their time and avoid burnout that can be attributed to failing grades and poor wellbeing.

Hear from our student team about their tips on how to juggle work, Uni and their social lives...

There are some things you can do to avoid burnout and maximise your time as you work and study:

Create a study plan

When each semester starts, take some time to plan your semester, study time and work to make sure that you are balancing and planning for big assessments and studying sufficiently for exams. Even just knowing what is coming up can help you manage stress.

Find a balance

It is important when you are taking on so much responsibility that you make sure your life remains balanced. Know your limits and make sure you are giving yourself enough time to relax, sleep, exercise, and eat. Consider taking more time off if you can from either work or study if you are not coping.

Let your work know that you are balancing study

Often your manager or supervisor is happy to work around your study schedule especially if they have enough notice. This will become more crucial when you need time near the end of semester for assignments and exams.

Make sure you are communicating with your workplace and your tutor or lecturer, if you are struggling. You can think of helpful adjustments to work or study together.

Don't forget to prioritise time for hobbies and friends

It may feel like you have no time when you’re preoccupied with work and Uni but even if you are drained, hobbies and friends are important to make time for to relax. There are many relaxing hobbies like drawing or taking a walk that you can try.

You may not have enough time or energy to go to every extracurricular event or party, but there are definitely more low effort ways you can hang out with people.

Low effort ways to socialise

Try listening to music, drawing, walking, reading, watching a show or completing a puzzle together with a friend, significant other or family member.

If you can’t see each other in person, accessing these things online (like an online puzzle website) or using a share screen function on Facebook, Zoom or Discord can be a good alternative.
