Why did you decide to study BMC at Monash?
I chose Monash for a few different reasons. I had always wanted to travel to Australia. Monash is one of the top 100 universities in the world and one of the best for my course. The campus seemed lovely. I had also done my fair share of research and seen all the Monash students’ reviews online.
I read about the available facilities and what the campus life was like. I also managed to connect with a Monash student on Instagram and ask her what life was like at Monash.
What was your study experience at Monash Arts like?
My experience was amazing. I was lucky to be able to complete the first year and a half of my course on campus and the remainder online. The tutors and lecturers were encouraging and cooperative. The campus had both restful and dynamic spaces including a few favourites like the library and the cafes. I also enjoyed using the radio and TV studio facilities in the Media Lab for my classes, and meeting students from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
BMC had a lot to offer and I wanted to actively participate in everything. This helped me make the key decisions. For example, I decided to take a PR unit which made me discover my passion for it. If I had not pursued that one unit, my path may have looked a lot different.
What have been the highlights of your degree overall?
There was such a wide variety of units to choose from. I learnt and practised all sorts of skills from photography, to magazine writing, to crafting journalism feature stories. The opportunity to experience a range of different units and the comprehensive assignments that followed led to finding my path.
Internships – can you talk about your different experiences?
There is so much to share.
In 2020, I started an online internship with an NGO called Climatehood. I created stories and posts for their Instagram and LinkedIn and managed the team by deciding what tasks needed to be given to who and checking final pieces. Based in Kerala, South India, we were a digital creation team of 6 people. I was Head of the Content Writing team.
In 2021, I started a placement in Melbourne with a non-government organisation called We Teach Well. I completed the placement online because of lockdowns, but it was amazing. I was responsible for creating social media strategies, posting on different platforms from HootSuite to Email Marketing. I was able to apply what I learned at university to my placement. For example, I learnt social media writing through one of my units and was able to use this knowledge in the internship.
As it turns out, I really like Social Media. I volunteered at Monash University with the MSA and made posts for their Instagram and LinkedIn pages as well. This was one of the first experiences which made me realise this is something I really like to do.
I then started interning with the Monash University student-run magazine, Lot’s Wife, as a Sub-editor and wrote a few pieces. I proofread and edited other student submissions and content, and also made photographic contributions.
I was also a Social Media Producer and Reporter for the Monash Journalism news site, MOJO News. We would have meetings and hear news pitches from different students and witness stories come to life. I learnt a lot from different people’s perspectives.
What were your favourite campus experiences?
Definitely meeting people from so many different backgrounds, trying different cuisines available at the cafes, and attending zestful campus events. In fact, the campus has everything from cafes, restaurants, and convenience stores to hairdressers, banks, and a post office that make the entire experience wholesome.
How has Monash Arts helped you become job ready?
My experience at Monash has completely shaped me. I was an introvert and did not know how to connect with people until Monash. The opportunity to interact and work with students from around the globe has changed me so much that now I’m a PR professional which is all about communication. If I hadn’t experienced Monash, PR would never have been a part of the plan.
What advice to future students?
Go to Monash. Don’t think twice.
Talk to people. Make as many friends as you can. Ask questions. Use as many facilities as you can. Monash has a lot to offer if you have the will to explore.
