Cindy Gottinger first recognised and predicted the clout China was developing during her time at University leading her to pursue an Arts degree focusing on Chinese studies.

“My arts degree was amazing, especially the Chinese component I did. The experience I had at Jiaotong University through Monash’s in country program was some of the highlights of my time at university.”

Since then she has worked to help cultivate relationships between Chinese-Australian youths through the Australia China Youth Dialogue since joining as a delegate in 2013.

In 2015 she joined the management team where she was able to help shape the way in how dialogue was conducted on their platform, to help foster young talent and facilitate alumni engagement.

“We help connect people whether they’ve moved to Australia or another part of the world.” Cindy said.

She has big aspirations for making a difference in Chinese-Australian relationships through her newest appointment of having been made a board member in 2018.

“I’m incredibly excited to see the role our organisation can play in terms of policy through collaborating with the business community.”

“Also, how to strengthen the cultural and sporting aspects and ties that can bring two nations together.”

Another one of her roles is as the product marketing lead at Google and it’s in Google’s office in Pudong, Shanghai where she greets us. She recalls the last time she was here 15 years ago with Monash during a stint at Jiaotong University through one of Monash’s international programs.

“I remember we went for a tour in the pearl tower and we had this stunning view of Pudong.” Cindy recalled.

“At the time, it was just a huge construction site and to see the growth, it’s incredible to think that I’m probably now working in one of the towers that was being constructed [15 years ago].”

In this role, she is at the forefront of communicating some of Google’s newest and most exciting products and solutions to the people and gathering consumer insights to inform future innovations.

“I need to [communicate] the best of Google’s technology to the world and to the users.”
