Why did you choose to study the Bachelor of Media Communication at Monash?

I chose this degree after attending a Bachelor of Media Communication seminar at Monash. I started off at a different university doing a similar degree in marketing, but right away I knew it wasn't the right degree for me. After attending the BMC seminar and learning all about the degree, I knew that with the resources and the teachers that were here, it was definitely something that I was interested in, so I switched.

What was your Monash study experience like?

During my time at Monash, I really enjoyed using all the resources. We were in the media labs a lot and got to know how to use all the equipment with really, really experienced teachers. The teachers themselves were an amazing resource and they introduce you to other amazing people within the field.

I chose to specialise in screen, as you have the opportunity to do electives from the other specialisations and outside the degree. I have a passion for sport and was able to meet people within that industry through a journalism class. I was quite persistent in taking up any opportunity, using all the resources available to me, and am a firm believer in putting yourself out there.

The way things are organised at Monash is amazing. The teaching portal website, Moodle, is really, really helpful. When COVID hit we were doing a lot on that site, but it was very clear and made the learning process a great experience and less stressful throughout. Moodle is still evolving to help enhance the learning experience to this day.

What opportunities did your course provide for professional development?

An amazing opportunity presented in this degree is a student internship programme. My internship with TLA Worldwide really helped me get to where I am today, and I’d say it’s the biggest reason why I'm now working for the Saints as a video producer. It gave me experience on the ground, and helped me make some amazing connections with the people I met working on different shoots.

I've always wanted to work in sporting clubs, so during my internship I applied for a lot of roles. Some I wasn't really qualified for, but I put myself out there anyway. By doing that, I’ve even met people through the interview process. For example, I applied for a role at another club when I wasn't as qualified, but put myself out there for being passionate, and being in the industry, and having a degree like this. Even though I wasn't qualified, the person who interviewed me was the one who later interviewed me for the Saints.

The biggest and best thing you can do is put yourself out there.
