Career Journey questions
Why did you choose to study your particular degree/s at Monash?
Like many Asian parents, my parents wanted me to study a Bachelor of Commerce at Monash, majoring in Accounting and Finance. Monash, as one of Australia's prestigious Group of Eight universities, has an excellent reputation and strong business programs, which made it a natural choice for my studies. However, after a year, I realised I didn’t want to give up on my dream of becoming a journalist. I then switched to a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Commerce double degree, majoring in journalism and minoring in Chinese translation. I chose journalism because I wanted to help more voices be heard.
How did you get your current position?
My current role is the result of a combination of academic learning, practical experience, and networking. In my final year, I took an internship elective unit where we had to find our own placements. I secured internships at a magazine, a Chinese-language radio station, and SBS Mandarin. After graduation, SBS Mandarin was hiring, and I was fortunate to get the opportunity to join the team.
How did the Monash Arts community support your growth and ambitions during your studies?
The Monash Arts community provided me with a wealth of resources. As an international student with English as my second language, I really appreciated the Journalism School’s dedicated support for international students. Before applying for jobs, I also sought guidance from a Monash career advisor, who helped strengthen my resume and cover letter. Additionally, my lecturers and tutors played a pivotal role in shaping my career aspirations through their invaluable feedback and mentorship.
How did your Monash Arts degree contribute to where you are today in your career or personal life?
My degree equipped me with strong analytical and communication skills that are invaluable in my career. The ability to critically evaluate information, craft compelling narratives, and adapt to different media platforms has been instrumental in my work. Beyond professional skills, my time at Monash also helped me develop resilience, adaptability, and a lifelong passion for learning.
Were you actively involved in any activities that enhanced your university experience, such as, student organisations or clubs, internships or study abroad?
Yes, I undertook an internship elective unit where I gained real-world industry insights and built my confidence in professional settings.
From your perspective, why is Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences an area of study crucial for today’s society?
The Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences play a vital role in shaping a well-informed and empathetic society. In a world that is constantly evolving, these disciplines provide critical insights into cultural diversity, social justice, and ethical decision-making. They also cultivate skills such as problem-solving, adaptability, and effective communication—qualities that are increasingly valued across all industries.
What advice would you give to current students on how to make the most of their time at Monash, both academically and socially?
I would encourage students to take full advantage of the opportunities available to them, whether it's utilising campus resources, attending networking events, or seeking internships. Building strong relationships with professors, peers, and industry professionals can open doors to unexpected opportunities. Most importantly, enjoy the journey, embrace challenges, and be proactive in shaping your own path.
