Monash Border Crossings Observatory
The Monash Border Crossings Observatory was a research unit within the Faculty of Arts from 2011 - 2021.
The Observatory was an innovative virtual research centre connecting Australian and international stakeholders with independent, leading-edge research on border crossings. It brought together an international network of researchers and NGOs to place human experiences at the centre of border and migration studies.
The Observatory's founding members were: Directors Professor Sharon Pickering and Professor Leanne Weber; Program Leader, A/P Marie Segrave; Managing Director/Key Researcher, Rebecca Powell; and Researcher, Meg Randolph. Key collaborative workspaces included: Border Policing: Gender; Human Rights & Security; Fluid Security in the Asia Pacific; The Australian Deportation Project; and Border Deaths.

The database was established by Professor Leanne Weber and Professor Sharon Pickering as part of the research for Globalization and Borders: Death at the Global Frontier (Weber and Pickering, Palgrave, 2011).
