Broken Dreams: The Psychosocial Impact of Taliban on Afghan Girls: Exploring the Shadow of Oppression and the search for light
Since the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, Afghan communities have faced profound and enduring hardships, culminating in a prolonged humanitarian crisis. Afghan women and girls, in particular, have suffered extensive violations of their fundamental rights, most notably the drastic reduction in their access to education.
In response to these dire challenges, the Monash Global Peace and Security Centre (Monash GPS) successfully completed the "Broken Dreams: The Psychosocial Impact on Afghan Girls" project. This vital initiative sheds light on and addresses the severe psychosocial effects experienced by young Afghan women under the oppressive Taliban regime. Now, we are proud to launch this impactful collection of essays, bringing the voices of these resilient women to the forefront and advocating for their rights on the global stage.

Each essay within "Broken Dreams" not only tells a personal story but also serves as a powerful testament to the resilience and strength of Afghan girls and women.
The narratives highlight the severe psychological toll exerted by the Taliban's oppressive rule, including experiences of anxiety, depression, and a pervasive sense of loss. Despite these hardships, the essays also underscore the incredible courage and determination of these young women to pursue education and advocate for their rights.
The authors, 9 brave young Afghan women, articulate their experiences with harrowing honesty, revealing the deep cuts of injustice that mark their lives. They write not only to share their pain but to challenge the silence that often surrounds their suffering. Through their words, this collection aims to extend beyond mere documentation, aspiring to act as a catalyst for change.
The collection aims to go beyond mere documentation, aspiring to ignite discussions on gender, education, and human rights, and to inspire actions that address the urgent needs of Afghan girls and women.
It is a call to the international community to recognise and act upon the hidden scars these young women bear, as addressing these psychosocial effects is crucial for their healing and for the broader aim of societal recovery and peacebuilding in Afghanistan.
We invite you to access and read the essays from the "Broken Dreams" project here. By engaging with these powerful stories, you join us in supporting Afghan girls and women in their fight for education and equality.
