New Scoping Review by GPS Fellow Richard Fosu Examines African Union Peace and Security Interventions

GPS fellow Richard Fosu co-authored a new scoping review in International Peacekeeping.

Two decades of African Union peace and security interventions. 186 studies. Yet, one question remains that nobody has systematically answered.

GPS fellow Richard Fosu co-authored a new scoping review in International Peacekeeping that pulls together over 20 years of scholarship on AU peace and security interventions — synthesizing the literature across four themes: approaches, legitimacy, effectiveness, and ownership.

The review's central argument: AU interventions are best understood not as either a Pan-African success story or a product of external dependence, but as a form of strategic African agency operating within an emerging hybrid global security architecture — particularly significant as UN peace operations are in decline.
