Rethinking the role of culture in gender and family violence: a panel discussion

As part of Monash's Equity, Diversity and Inclusion week, the Monash Intercultural Lab is hosting the below panel event:

About: Gender and family violence is an urgent and global issue that crosses national boundaries, cultures, genders. It does not, however, impact all people equally, and yet responses to gender and family violence sometimes assume a particular default. In this panel, experts will explore and challenge any misconceptions about the intersection of culture, gender and violence and shed light on the importance of paying attention to cultural and linguistic differences. We will also discuss how assumptions about culture and cultural stereotypes can sometimes further marginalise those impacted, and how to avoid this. Join researchers and service providers from the Monash Intercultural Lab, the Gender and Family Violence Centre and Wise Well Women to discuss what culture has to do with gender and family violence and what we should do next.

Panelists: Dr Hyein Ellen Cho, Dr Emma McNicol, Dr Stefani Vasil, Lorna Gillespie

Date: Wednesday 6 September 2023

Time: 3.30-5.00pm

Location: Clayton campus
