Professor Dong Chen

Soochow University Distinguished Professor and Founding Head of the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering (2013-). His professional interests include life quality engineering (LQE), bioinspired chemical engineering, food engineering and particle technology.

Previously he held Chair Professorships at Xiamen University (2010-2012), Monash University (2006-2009) and The University of Auckland (2001-2005). Was an academic at Auckland since 1994 and a Senior Research Engineer at New Zealand Dairy Research Institute (now Fonterra Research) (1991-1993).

Prof. Dong Chen has received many awards such as X-Institute (Shenzhen 0-1 Institute) Distinguished Mentor (2023); Most Favourite Teacher of Soochow University (2017); Next Power Professorship at Taiwan Tsinghua University (2017); IAEF Lifetime Achievement Award in Food Engineering (2015); The IDS Founder Award for Outstanding Contribution to Drying (2014); etc. Received Docteur Honoris Causa of Agro campus Quest France (2017); Fellow of Royal Society of New Zealand (2000); Fellow of Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (2007); Fellow of IChemE (2001).

Prof. Dong Chen has delivered around 100 invited talks including plenary and keynotes. Recently an ICEF-13 Plenary Speaker on In Vitro Human Digestion System Development (2019) and a Plenary Speaker at Mediterranean Annual Conference of Chemical Engineering (2020) for LQE and Food. Has by July 2023 published over 720 journal articles, 230 conference papers, and several books. He was a Senior Scientific Consultant for Ivy Farm (Oxford) and XBiome (Shenzhen) (2019-2022).

Personal interests include oil painting, pop music, reading and applied mathematics. In addition, he was the company founder of Dong Concepts New Materials Tech Ltd (2012-), XD Pro-health Instrumentation (Suzhou) Ltd (2018-) and Suzhou Smart Filtration Technology (2021-).
