My name is Rebecca, and I’m a third-year science student majoring in biochemistry and physiology. I aspire to make a difference and to be a leader that is able to motivate and empower those around me. I’ve been working as a consultant with non-profits to tackle their toughest organisational issues and I have been the Welfare officer for the student association, creating initiatives and policies to support student’s wellbeing.

From the Global Discovery Program, I hope to continue learning new skills, expand my network and to hear insights from great leaders from a range of different industries so that I can grow as a leader and learn more about different career pathways.

Hi, I’m Gopisankar, MBBS, MD (Clinical Pharmacology) pursuing my PhD at Monash University. After working for a long time in clinics, I took a different route from being a medical doctor to engaging myself in dementia research with enthusiasm and compassion.

I want to see a change in the world to embrace the fact that we are being challenged by a growing elderly population and its high time to create a world that is better and enjoyable to all extremes of age using technology. I believe that ‘Ageism’ is something that will arise soon as one in four people in the world will be elderly by 2090.

I’m attracted to the global discovery program where I can connect with many real ‘problem-solvers’ or in other words, the entrepreneurs around the world.

I’m a fourth year Commerce/Biomedical Science student majoring in Economics. I enjoy learning about health, disease processes and medical research. I also enjoy that economics counterintuitively employs rigid rules to explain human behaviour, which is wide-ranging and erratic.

The Global Discovery Program offers the opportunity to include diverse and influential leaders in my network. I want to use the program to understand how I might form multidisciplinary coalitions of various business and industry leaders, governments, and social movements to tackle the global problems of today.

Jesslyn Lan is a pre-service teacher studying a Master of Teaching in Early Years and Primary Education. She is deeply passionate about closing the education inequality gap for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, and ensuring school is relevant to students’ needs and interests. She believes that there are many ways education can be enhanced to make it more inclusive, relevant and engaging to students as well as teachers.

Jesslyn enjoys reading and writing stories for personal enjoyment, and volunteering at various organisations that aim to improve education experience, inclusivity and quality for children from diverse backgrounds. With a deep love for learning, she hopes to transform lives through education, one child at a time, one conversation at a time.

Hi I’m Faina, a Masters student passionate about all thing’s sustainable development.  My background includes an undergraduate Degree in marketing and PR and an exciting and diverse career in Local Government.

The theme for this year’s Global Discovery Program: ‘reigniting international ambition’ got me incredibly excited as there are many boundary-spanning opportunities that exist within this space. To me, the Program is a perfect opportunity to scale up ideas that I have previously developed and implemented at a grassroots level. I look forward to participating, working with, and learning from the diverse group of professionals and my fellow peers.

My name is Marni, and I’m a passionate Science and Global Studies student majoring in Environmental Science and International Relations.

Every year the world becomes more connected, and so too do the issues that we face. With climate change being an issue that transcends the scientific and national sphere, being able to learn and collaborate with individuals globally is vital. Therefore, I hope to one day explore the intersection between climate change and gender inequality.

I applied for this program to explore such global issues alongside like-minded individuals, but also to learn from both my peers and professionals working in diverse fields. Moving into a post-lockdown world, I am excited to hear some of the solutions in reigniting international ambition and creating positive change.

James strives to bring it to the next level by establishing a start-up that focuses on devising a psychoeducation framework that could be incorporated into the school curriculum alongside professionals. Ultimately, James is eager to learn from alumni success stories and their invaluable experiences.

Sienna’s desire to make a difference was ignited after being the youngest and the only woman of colour working as a software engineer intern on her team. She recognised the huge lack of female representation across the workplace and in leadership roles.

Sienna has since been participating in speaking and leadership programs for women of colour, and advocating for diversity and inclusion. Sienna believes that our world can achieve greater things when the people behind technology represent the society we live in. Through the Global Discovery Program, Sienna aims to embrace the knowledge and insight from influential leaders to help her make meaningful change.

Hi I’m Brannan and in 2021 I will be heading into my fourth year at Monash University studying a double degree in Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of banking and finance. I’m a passionate swimming coach and enjoy roles that involve interactions with a wide array of individuals.

I applied for the global discovery program as I believe that it would be an awesome opportunity to meet like minded students, collaborate and develop my critical thinking skills. The path Monash’s global leaders have taken to succeed in New York City shows that if you apply yourself to a high standard you can reach your goals in life, which is truly inspirational. I hope to learn from these leaders, be inspired, build my professional network and see what skills I can adopt to set myself up on my future career path.
