Industry
Student innovations. Industry solutions.
Monash’s Industry Innovation Program (IIP) connects you with our best and brightest STEM students. To solve your key commercial challenges – and contribute real value.
You’ll help shape the project’s scope. We’ll provide a dedicated academic supervisor and high-tech, low-risk research facilities.
Together, we’ll prototype new products, study commercial viability and refine your processes – to strengthen your competitive advantage.
How your business benefits from the IIP
What your business provides
As part of the IIP, your business will:
- Assign a mentor: They’ll work closely with the students – and Monash – to provide guidance and help steer the project.
- Engage with Monash: You’ll collaborate with a Monash academic supervisor and the IIP Team to outline your scope, requirements and milestones.
- Provide financial support: You’ll cover the cost of the IIP as determined by our IIP team and the length of the project. This will cover the student’s scholarship, infrastructure access and overhead costs.
What Monash provides
To support your IIP, Monash will:
- Scope the project: Together, we’ll clearly outline the project’s deliverables and scope the work. You’ll receive a report outlining the planned solutions and suggestions.
- Connect you with top STEM talent: We’ll help you build a high-performing student team to solve your challenges and design innovative solutions.
- Assign an academic supervisor: An expert Monash academic will liaise with your business – while supervising, advising and supporting the student team.
- Engage with top-tier experts: We collaborate with world-class researchers – across engineering, IT, science, pharmacy and beyond – to enhance your processes.
- Supply advanced technology: We’ll harness state-of-the-art technology – such as the Digital Twin laboratory, the Digital Twin Processing laboratory, large-scale 3D printers and advanced robotics – to spur innovation. Tech at the MSMH is included in your IIP and you can hire other campus facilities as needed.
Industry Registration
IIP stages: How the program progresses
| 1. | Proposal and suitability check: Complete the IIP Industry Enquiry form with an outline of your project. We’ll then meet with you to discuss your needs and goals. If it’s suitable for an IIP, our academic supervisor and IIP team will approve your project. |
| 2. | Scoping and agreement: Together, we’ll determine your IIP’s outcomes, timings and costs. We’ll develop a formal agreement between your business and the IIP team. |
| 3. | Student applications: We’ll promote your IIP on IIP advertising portal – Monash’s dedicated employment platform. You’ll help us interview and select your preferred students. |
| 4. | IIP begins: Starting in Semester 1, Semester 2, we’ll coordinate a kick-off meeting to help students get started on the project’s scope. |
| 5. | Engagement: Our academic supervisor and IIP team will regularly meet with you and the students. To provide support – and keep the project focused on your goals. |
| 6. | Completion: You’ll receive a final report outlining the team’s solutions and suggestions. And if it goes well? You might then hire the students as employees. Or select to implement the solution. |

Meet our industry partners
Hear from our industry partners how Monash IIP students have solved real-world challenges – from removing carbon to greywater solutions.
“Our collaboration with Monash University through the Industry Innovation Program has been a beneficial partnership. The students working on the carbon capture project have provided timely and meaningful solutions to the Woodside Energy Partnership and we look forward to continuing relationships through this program.”
Claudia De Los Rios Perez,
Woodside Monash Partnership Manager, Woodside Energy
"The Industry Innovation Program has been hugely beneficial to our company and mission. We have been able to accelerate development of new products, have dedicated resources focused on this part of our business, access to the Maker Space and experts at Monash University. The students have been very engaged, dedicated, flexible and open to feedback as we have worked together. The program itself is so flexible as it allows us to set up the objectives, timelines and tasks to suit our company and product. We would love to take on more IIP students as our company grows and we consider further product development opportunities"
