Bird-Sensitive Wind Farm Planning: Optimisation and Visual Analytics for Biodiversity-Conscious Siting
Wind energy development can conflict with bird biodiversity through habitat disruption, migration corridor interference, and collision risks. Our project develops an interactive planning tool that combines multi-objective optimisation with visual analytics to help planners explore trade-offs between energy production and bird conservation.
Using a local case study, the tool integrates spatial data on land use, bird habitats, migration routes, and wind resources into a map-based visual analytics tool, allowing users to compare siting scenarios, adjust priorities, and identify biodiversity-sensitive wind farm layouts. This proof-of-concept prototype is designed to support stakeholder engagement and future scaling.
