Traditional owners

The land on which Monash University is built, was traditionally occupied by the Yalukit-willam clan of the Bunurong people. The Bunurong people were part of a much larger alliance of five Aboriginal tribes, together forming the Kulin nation. Their collective territory extended around Port Phillip and Western Port, up into the Great Dividing Range and the Loddon and Goulburn River valleys. Prior to European settlement, the Bunurong people lived in this area for tens of thousands of years.
