Mary Droutsas is a 5th-year Master of Architecture student, with an interest in the relationship between industry, community and the evolving urban fabric. Her projects have explored themes of material reuse and adaptive reuse, examining how existing structures and materials can be reinterpreted to create new spatial and social value. Her most recent work investigates how architecture can foster connection, adaptability and identity within changing urban contexts.
Site Axonometric: Mixed-Use Industrial Redevelopment, Abbotsford
This project reimagines an industrial site in Abbotsford, Melbourne, as a mixed-use precinct that brings together production, retail and community spaces. It explores how a new construction can coexist, using material reuse and layered spatial connections to reflect the area’s industrial character. The design is presented through a detailed axonometric drawing that highlights the integration of courtyards, circulation routes and program relationships across the site.
Ground Floor Plan: Production, Packaging and Eatery
Ground floor plan, illustrating the layout of production, packaging, retail, eatery and community spaces, with courtyards and circulation designed to engage the public and reveal the activity within the site.
First Floor Plan: Microbrewery
First Floor plan showing the microbrewery production layout on the left, packaging in the middle, connected via a walkway and the test kitchen on the right in the eatery building, providing a space for people to experiment with ingredients produced on site and celebrate multicultural culinary collaboration in Abbotsford, something currently lacking.
Section B: Production and Eatery
Section drawing showing the interior of the production building and eatery, highlighting the workflow of brewing on level 1, coffee roasting on level 2 and a bakery on level 3. In addition, the layering of spaces and the interaction between staff and visitors support both production and community engagement.
East Elevation: From Victoria Crescent
East elevation from Victoria Crescent, showing the addition of a sawtooth roof and varied rooflines that blend new construction with the site’s industrial character. The extension of the existing brick heritage wall uses recycled brick, while steel elements on site emphasise the industrial aesthetic, creating a dynamic and contextual street frontage.
