Mixed Creatives transforms Yarraville’s industrial edge into a dynamic hub for creative and cultural production, supporting users with shared interests. Located between industrial and residential zones, it integrates studios, makerspaces, residential units, and public amenities within a flexible framework that adapts to evolving needs. Shared civic and leisure spaces bridge the energy of making with the calm of living, fostering collaboration, interaction, and knowledge exchange. By combining production, habitation, and learning, Mixed Creatives cultivates an inclusive, resilient community, driving creative growth, urban renewal, and cultural engagement across Footscray and Yarraville.

Hybrid Section

This hybrid section illustrates how the three primary programs — industrial, residential, and community — are strategically arranged in response to the site context. At the centre, the community hub and its shared courtyard anchor the development, providing a setting for civic activity and everyday interaction. As a spatial mediator, this central zone negotiates the shift from production to habitation, establishing a gradient that allows the two contrasting conditions to coexist within a unified urban framework.

Ground Floor Plan

The concept began with a central question: How can an industrial site be transformed into a place that celebrates coexistence between production and habitation? The project reflects Footscray and Yarraville’s creative energy and industrial heritage, informed by education and the arts. This led to the integration of three programs – residential, industrial, and community – enabling the site to serve multiple audiences, including tenants, users, and the broader public. This informed the integration of studios, spaces for media-related courses, and other specialised spaces within the creative industry building, establishing a foundation for collaborative and community-oriented environments.

Axonometric Diagram of Site Programs

The program placement is designed to align with the existing urban fabric, with the three programs arranged in response to surrounding zoning. The creative industry hub is positioned along the industrial edge on the eastern side, adjacent to the existing chemical plant, while the community hub and central courtyard function as a buffer between the industrial and residential zones. The residential block sits along Hyde Street, engaging the residential area, and a loading dock along the southern boundary minimises disruption to residents and visitors using the shared courtyard.

North and West Elevations

To distinguish between the buildings, varying brick tones and carefully designed shading devices are employed to visually define each program. Differences in height and the deliberate spatial separation of programs further emphasise their unique functions while maintaining overall cohesion. These strategies also highlight the central courtyard, reinforcing its role as the civic core of the site. The courtyard serves as a shared gathering space, linking the industrial, residential, and community programs, fostering interaction, circulation, and a sense of connection throughout the precinct.

Central Courtyard

The central courtyard is conceived as an accessible and inviting hub that encourages community interaction, leisure, and social engagement. It functions as the civic heart of the site, mediating the transition between industrial activity and residential life, while fostering a sense of connection and belonging among users across all programs.

Residential Apartment Block

The residential apartment block is designed to engage and activate the street edge, contributing to a vibrant streetscape. It enhances passive surveillance, promoting safety and activity along the public realm, while providing comfortable living spaces that respond to the surrounding urban context.
