MAVERIC (Monash AdVanced Environment for Research and Intelligent Computing)

Australia’s first university-led AI supercomputer accelerating research, innovation, and sovereign capability.

Monash is pioneering Australia’s sovereign AI capacity with a clear purpose: to empower researchers, clinicians, and innovators to solve problems that currently lie beyond our computational reach.

Reimagining What's Possible

The challenges that define our generation demand a fundamentally new approach to AI research, from detecting cancer before symptoms emerge to reversing chronic diseases, discovering life-saving drugs in days instead of decades, and deciphering our planet's complex climate systems.

This A$60 million investment directly addresses a critical gap in Australia’s high-performance computing infrastructure, enabling large-scale computational projects that were previously impossible for Australian researchers.

As Monash’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sharon Pickering noted, without this kind of AI compute power, Australian scientists have been competing “with one arm tied behind their back.” MAVERIC ensures Australia can lead rather than lag, “so that Australia can be world leaders, not just take second place”, by providing our world-class talent with the best infrastructure in the world to support them. In doing so, it positions Australia to attract top global talent and foster the collaborations that turn scientific breakthroughs into real-world solutions.

Why Sovereign AI Matters

Sovereign AI is essential for research because it ensures sensitive data remains within the jurisdiction of national laws, which is particularly crucial for sectors where data privacy and protection are paramount. Research data carries serious privacy and security risks when controlled by foreign entities, and advances in AI have significantly increased the economic value of this data.

For breakthrough research to flourish, researchers must have confidence that their data remains protected under frameworks they understand and trust, enabling the open scientific collaboration necessary for discovery while safeguarding the individuals and communities who make research possible.
