About

History

In 2017 and 2019, the 1st and 2nd Australasian Diagnostic Error in Medicine conferences were hosted in Melbourne. The conference was renamed the Improving Diagnosis Conference in 2021 to reflect its broader mission of promoting accurate and timely diagnosis, while learning from and reducing diagnostic error.

Since 2025, Monash Medical School has continued this work through the annual Improving Diagnosis Symposium.

The symposium brings together professionals from across healthcare and academia to explore one of the most complex challenges in clinical practice and advance diagnostic excellence.

Its enduring theme, ‘The Art and Science of Diagnosis’, recognises that improving diagnosis requires both the art and science of medicine, supported by multidisciplinary collaboration.

Participants include medical educators, general practitioners, physicians, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, nurses, paramedics, allied health practitioners, researchers, quality managers, medical administrators, and medical and nursing students.
