Gurpreet Dhaliwal

Professor of Medicine

Dr Gurpreet Dhaliwal MD is a clinician-educator and Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. He cares for patients and teaches medical students and residents in the emergency department, inpatient wards and outpatient clinic at the San Francisco VA Medical Center, where he directs the internal medicine clerkship.

An internationally recognised expert in diagnostic reasoning, Dr Dhaliwal studies how physicians think – how they make diagnoses, develop expertise, and work with technology to improve clinical decision-making. In 2025, he became the first physician to compete head-to-head against CaBOT – an AI system trained on the complete 100-year archive of The New England Journal of Medicine Case Records – in a live diagnostic challenge.

His work has been featured in The New York Times (‘Could a Computer Outthink This Doctor?’) and The Atlantic (‘The Making of the Diagnostic Mind’), and from 2013–2018 he wrote for The Wall Street Journal's The Experts Health Care Report.

Dr Dhaliwal is a member of the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators and the UCSF Department of Medicine Council of Master Clinicians. He has published more than 180 articles, received numerous teaching awards – including the 2015 national Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award and the 2019 UCSF's Osler Distinguished Teacher Award – and has served as a visiting professor at more than 50 universities in the United States and around the world. He has also appeared on Freakonomics M.D., The Curbsiders, The Wall Street Journal Report and many other medical podcasts.

Nicolas Szecket

Nic Szecket is an Argentinian-born, Canadian-trained general physician. He has lived and worked in Auckland, New Zealand since 2010.

Apart from his clinical work, Nic has an interest in medical education, clinical reasoning and Point of Care ultrasound (POCUS).  He focuses his efforts on teaching diagnostic reasoning and POCUS to trainees.

He is an award-winning clinical educator both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Nic is co-founder and co-host of the popular, and now retired, clinical reasoning podcast, IMreasoning, and has presented internationally on the same topics of the show.

Nic's passion outside of work is woodworking.

David Anderson

Executive Medical Director
Ambulance Victoria

David is the Executive Medical Director of Ambulance Victoria, an intensivist at The Alfred Hospital, and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Paramedicine at Monash University.

He worked as a paramedic in Auckland before qualifying as a doctor and undertaking postgraduate training in anaesthesia, intensive care medicine, palliative medicine and prehospital and retrieval medicine in Auckland, Sydney and Toronto before qualifying in intensive care medicine and settling in Melbourne.

His clinical interests are prehospital and retrieval medicine, trauma critical care, ECMO, palliative care and bioethics.
