Taylor – USA
Master of International Development Practice
“I chose the Master of International Development Practice at Monash because it was so unique. It encompassed so many different disciplines that I was passionate about, like human rights, gender equality, and sustainability. It felt like an amazing opportunity to learn the practicalities (of) the work I want to do.” “I’m definitely going to apply for an internship next semester with Oxfam and Engineers Without Borders. The following semester I plan to study and research abroad in South Africa, since we have a campus there.” “I love that there’s always something to do. I love taking little day trips. There are so many great places close by like the Dandenong Ranges, the Yarra Valley or the Great Ocean Road. Then there’s also the art, music, cafes, amazing food. I honestly couldn’t make a list of all the things I want to do in Melbourne because it would seriously be too long.”
Umar – Canada
Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)
“At Monash, everyone helps each other. We have Facebook groups where people post their notes and questions. All the lecturers are super helpful. You can email any of them, for example, the MBBS director for the pre-clinical years – you can email him at any time, and he gets back to you straight away.” “In Canada, all of the universities are super grand. They have huge campuses, old buildings, huge lawns – so that’s the kind of image I had in my mind. When I came here it was a little different. It wasn’t what I thought university was going to be like, but the people are amazing, so straight away, I was so happy I was here.” “I was excited to move because I’ve always wanted to go abroad. I wasn’t homesick at all, maybe for like two weeks, but I adjusted quickly. Culture-wise, Australia and Canada are very similar. The weather is very different though – I love it. “If you’re on the wire about coming to Monash, just do it. Don’t think about it too much, you’ll figure it out once you get here. It was a great transition for me, and very easy. Also, get a Skype account to stay in touch with your parents.”
