Nakul’s journey to university was shaped by a passion for business, hospitality and cultural exploration. Inspired by his family’s deep roots in the hospitality industry, he developed a strong appreciation for service excellence and business operations, leading him to pursue a Bachelor of Business degree at Monash’s Caulfield campus.Monash student, Nakul

His choice of double majors was strategic: "I chose accounting and marketing because it allows me to blend analytics with creativity. Accounting provides a strong financial foundation, while marketing helps me understand consumer behaviour and branding strategies, which align with my long-term career goals in business strategy and management."

As an international student researching universities, Nakul was drawn to several key factors. "I was impressed by Monash's strong industry connections, employability support, and focus on practical learning," he explains. The university's global reputation and vibrant student community sealed the decision. "Choosing Monash has been one of the most rewarding decisions of my academic journey."

Stepping into leadership roles through volunteering

Now in his second year, Nakul has thrown himself into leadership roles that help other students navigate their university journey. As a Peer Mentor at Monash Business School, he assists first-year students with their transition, sharing academic tips, helping manage course workloads, and building their confidence.

His role as Student Ambassador has been equally rewarding, supporting Business School promotion through Open Day, Orientation, and networking sessions while creating social media content for Instagram. "I also had the opportunity to represent the Business School as a speaker during university webinars and events, which sharpened my public speaking and leadership abilities."

These mentoring experiences have been transformative: "I've been able to support fellow students in their university transition while strengthening my leadership and communication skills. The university encourages networking, personal growth, and a strong sense of community, which has helped me feel at home as an international student."

Beyond his formal roles, Nakul actively engages with the Monash Marketing Society (MMS), the Monash Accounting Students’ Association (MASA), and the Business and Commerce Students’ Society (BCSS), expanding both his network and industry knowledge. "My experience in volunteering and leadership has reinforced the importance of community, resilience, and continuous learning in my journey."

Balancing these commitments with academics requires careful planning. "I set weekly priorities, use a planner to stay organised, and make sure to keep some time aside for rest and self-care," he shares, highlighting the importance of sustainable time management.

Finding belonging in Monash Student Communities

Nakul at Phoenix College Trivia NightNakul joined Phoenix College in Monash Student Communities to build connections on campus. Joining as a first-year gave him "a true sense of belonging and made me feel more at home on campus." The experience was so positive that he returned the following year as a College Advisor. One initiative that stood out for Nakul was Beach Day, where students from all residential colleges and student communities came together for outdoor games, food and music. "It was a fun, inclusive experience that truly reflected the spirit of Monash."

"In this role, I actively help guide students on daily university life, support their cultural adjustment, and encourage their participation in events that build meaningful peer relationships," he explains. It's a role that allows him to pay forward the support he received during his own transition.

His involvement with MSC has strengthened his leadership, communication, and event coordination skills while allowing him to build friendships across the entire Monash community – exactly the kind of cross-cultural connections that make university life rich and rewarding.
