MUHREC

Monash University Human Research Ethics Committee (MUHREC) is constituted in accordance with the provisions of the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research 2025.

Within this framework, MUHREC has considerable expertise to address ethical issues arising from the wide range of research categories it must consider and to ensure that its decision-making is of the highest ethical standard.

Interested in joining MUHREC?

Members duties include:

  • Read research proposals via an online system prior to committee meetings and decide if these meet the requirements of the National Statement and are ethically acceptable.
  • Attend 7-8 meetings throughout the year and contribute to the discussion and follow up review processes. Meetings are held online on Tuesdays, during working hours, and are 2 – 4 hours long.
  • Finalise any follow-up out of session reviews within the required timeframes.
  • Maintain confidentiality about matters considered by MUHREC and are not authorised to make public comments on behalf of Monash University.

Indigenous Subcommittee of MUHREC

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander MUHREC subcommittee members review all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research from a cultural perspective. Each member is responsible for safeguarding and promoting the standards set out in the AIATSIS Code by:

  • Promoting ethical and responsible practice in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research
  • Increasing the contribution of Indigenous knowledges to Australian research
  • Ensuring research has a positive impact and benefits Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander MUHREC subcommittee members are recruited from across all faculties and departments of the university, and include both academic and professional staff.
